SEVENTH SUCCESSIVE DEFEAT FOR JETS

The Jets travelled to Thurmaston Magpies to play one of the strongest teams in the division, and despite losing their seventh straight match, probably put in their performance of the season.

Two very early goals gave the Magpies the advantage early on as the Jets took time to find their feet. However, the Jets refused to lie down and began to play some great football and attacked with speed and skill down both flanks. A series of superb crossfield balls from Anderton to Withers were the catalyst for a series of raids on the Magpies goal. Withers beat the left full-back time after time and one of these attacks brought a goal. A superb Withers cross was met at the far post for Ironmonger to volley home with style.

Santin down the left and Withers down the right were now flying and putting dangerous balls into the box. Baxter and Anderton were playing lovely passing and moving football in midfield, and Denham was foot perfect as a sweeper behind the backline.

Five minutes into the second half and the Jets drew level. Consistent pressure forced a series of corners and crosses and one dropped at the feet of Baxter to volley home high into the net from 10 yards.

For 15 fantastic second half minutes the Jets were pushing hard for the lead. Withers hit the bar, Santin had a drive saved and Baxter blasted over as the boys in red were in full flow. But, the sucker punch was waiting. Thurmaston weathered the brief storm and regained their composure to counter attack with quality and precision. Four similar goals came in the last 12 minutes. All from crosses and all with speed and skill.

A superb game of football, literally at times end to end. Thurmaston deserved the win, but the Jets didn't deserve the scoreline. Had just one of those second half chances gone in it could have been a different game.

Too many good performances to mention.  Some great football, some great passing and some great tackling. Luke Denham was man of the match for a master class in a sweeping role.
