This week the squad played its last friendly before the season gets under way - The team travelled the short distance to East Leake to play Athletic. The game stated very slowly for the Donington team with the home side settling down the quicker with them playing some good football, but credit to the Donington team for competing and battling away and it was the visiting side that made the breakthrough when Aaron Mumford put Donington in front. The home side then came back straight away and when Donington failed to with the home sides long throw they equalised when the ball landed at the feet at an unmarked East Leake player. The first half ended with Donington almost going in front when Steve Miller lobbed the goalkeeper from 20 yards only to see the ball come back off the cross bar.
Half Time: East Leake 1 v 1 Castle Donington FC
After a half time team talk Donington came out for the second half determined to improve their passing game and they certainly did improve because they started to control the game in midfield with some good flowing football which started to worry the the home side and it was after one such flowing move that Donington eventually got in front when Steve Miller scored Donington's 2nd goal. This promted the home side to press even harder for the equaliser but the Donington's defence of lance Milward, Mark Rayns, Sam Lee, Adam Sharpe, and Kelvin Rampton were more than up for the challenge. Donington's Midfield of Adam Stallard, Arron Mumford, ian Fisher, Chris Carder and Dave Gourlay were more than winning the midfield battle. Donington's forwards Steve Miller and Dan Ambalavaner were also creating problems for the home side. Donington then came close to scoring their third goal when Steve miller put a inch perfect goal across the east Leake box only to see Chris Carder's shot go over the cross bar. Then Donington introduced new signing Dave Carver to the game and 2 minutes from the end he latched on to a great cross field ball from Steve Miller to score the teams third goal. After the game coach Bill McFarlane said that overall he was very pleased with the result, but added that it was a game of two halves with the home side playing the better football in the 1st half and Donington having to defend brilliantly and in the second Donington playing some really good flowing football and dominating play.
